A week later on Saturday, Adelene stood in the hallway of her apartment with her lower leg, knee down to her toes, encased in a walking cast. She had insisted on going home, despite Clay’s misgivings about how well she would cope. He had insisted the he would stop on Monday and drive her to work. If she had stayed any longer at his cabin, she was certain he would have stomped on her last nerve. Like a chameleon, he changed overnight, morphing from the interested sexy, long-lost boyfriend to an overbearing personal care aide and protector whose driving force in life was to smother her with food, kindness, and help. And he hovered. Like an persistent mosquito, he hovered over her every minute he wasn’t at work.

But the worse blow was when he confiscated her car keys and announced that her brother, her cousin, or he would shuttle her to wherever she wanted to go when she finished her work day. She tried on more than one occasion to remind him her right ankle was uninjured, and she could drive herself, but he contended she shouldn’t be outside on the wintry walks without assistance.

Now, she searched in the hall closet for her winter coat. Grabbing her spare car keys, she hobbled out to the garage, threw her cane in the passenger seat, and headed to the grocery store. She was hungry for freedom, not groceries. She was tired of being coddled and a change of scenery—even shelves crowded with an array of colorful cake mixes and canned foods—would be welcome.

The local Food Mart was humming with activity when she parked near the front entrance, grabbed her purse, her grocery list, and an abandoned shopping cart in the lot, and hobbled inside. She had barely made it to the fresh food section when Beulah Edwards pushed her squealing cart beside her near the vegetable display where potatoes were stacked in towering heaps of reds, white, and golden varieties.

“Well, well, if it isn’t the new owner of the schoolhouse,” Beulah cooed, halting. “Looks like there’ll be a lot of work for just a few senseless classes. They can be held in any old building around town, you know.”

The idea of pelting the realtor with the first potato she could lay her hands on fleetingly crossed Adelene’s mind. She resisted.

“I’m planning to make it a place for learning, but also a teen community center,” she said. “The young people who are struggling in school are often the kids who don’t have friends. I see the center as a place where they’re all in the same boat. I just have to get them to become a team and row together in the same direction.”

Beulah stared at her, baffled. “What? Rowing? In what boat?”

“Never mind.” Adelene pushed her cart forward, but the realtor laid a hand on her forearm to stop her.

“You think you’re so smart, don’t you? But I have news for you, Miss High and Mighty Schoolmarm, Dwayne has relatives who work in the courthouse.
